Seasonal Mini-Split Maintenance in Rumney
Electric utility: NH Electric Co-op · Grafton County
Rumney is served by New Hampshire Electric Co-op, and the co-op’s rebate structure explains a lot about what is hanging on walls in this town. The standard incentive runs $250 a ton on a qualifying air-source heat pump. But install enough of them to carry at least 80 percent of the heating load in a house that was on electric resistance, and the co-op pays $2,000 a ton. That is a very different number, and it got a great deal of baseboard torn out of Rumney Depot and West Rumney over the last several years.
Which means the mini-split in those houses is not a comfort appliance. It is the heating system. It works from October into May, turns around and does the cooling in July, and the only stretch it genuinely rests is somewhere around late September. A unit on that duty cycle accumulates in one year roughly what a lightly used unit accumulates in four.
The other half of town is the reverse. Camps and second homes up around Stinson Lake, places that see eight weekends a year. Those do not need two visits, and we do not sell them two visits.
Rumney Tip
Book the fall visit before the first hard frost rather than after it. Once the outdoor unit starts running defrost cycles into ground that is already frozen, a drainage problem you could have fixed in October becomes a block of ice under the pad that nobody is chipping out until April.
What twice a year actually consists of
Spring, after the heating season: filters washed and dried properly rather than knocked out on the porch rail, coil inspected and rinsed, pan and condensate line cleared, blower wheel inspected with a light and a mirror and reported on honestly — either it is fine or it needs the full teardown, and we tell you which. Outdoor compressor combed out, fins rinsed, pad checked for settling, line-set insulation checked where the sun and the squirrels get at it.
Fall, before the heating season: the same walk-through, plus the things that only matter once the unit is making heat. Defrost behaviour watched through a cycle if it is cold enough to see one. Drain path checked for the condensate the outdoor unit throws in heating mode, because that water has to get away from the pad instead of freezing into a block underneath it. Mounting feet and brackets checked. Filters again.
What twice a year does not include is a wheel teardown. That is separate work at a separate price, and most houses need it every other year, not every six months. We would far rather tell you your wheel is clean and leave than invent work on a unit we are standing in front of twice a year anyway.
A maintenance visit is $199 for the first indoor mini-split and its outdoor compressor, $119 for each additional indoor mini-split, and $69 for each additional outdoor compressor, with $199 as the minimum. A three-mini-split house running on one compressor comes to $437 a visit. Spring and fall, twice a year, same pricing each time.

Common Questions in Rumney
Is twice a year really necessary, or is that just the upsell?
For a house where the mini-split is the heat, yes. For a Stinson Lake camp used eight weekends a summer, no — once is plenty, and we will say so when you book. The honest test is run hours. Something carrying your heating load earns two visits a year. Something cooling a bedroom in August does not.
What is the difference between maintenance and a deep clean?
Maintenance is inspection and surface cleaning with the unit mostly together: filters, coil rinse, pan, line, outdoor unit. A deep clean is a teardown — louvers off, blower wheel out of the housing, every vane scrubbed. Maintenance catches a dirty wheel early. It does not fix one that is already packed.
Does skipping maintenance void the manufacturer warranty?
Read your own paperwork, because terms vary by brand and we will not speak for yours. What we can tell you is that most manufacturers require documented regular maintenance, and a claim denied over a coil choked with debris is a real thing that happens. We leave a dated record of every visit.
Can you do it while we are at work?
Usually, yes. Plenty of Rumney households leave a key or a door code, and we send photos of the filters, the coil and the outdoor unit when we are done, along with a written note on anything worth watching. Most two-mini-split houses take under ninety minutes start to finish.
Ours went in under the co-op rebate. Does that change anything?
Only in how hard they work. A rebate install that replaced electric resistance is carrying the whole house, which means more run hours, more air pulled across the coil, and a wheel that loads faster. Same work and same price as anywhere else — it just comes due sooner than it would on a supplemental unit.
