Seasonal Mini-Split Maintenance in Madison
Electric utility: Eversource (NH Electric Co-op in limited areas) · Carroll County
Madison has been filling in. The census counted 1,984 people in 2000 and 2,565 in 2020 — close to thirty percent more in twenty years. That’s a lot of new furnaces, except most of them aren’t furnaces. Back in 2000 there were 1,589 housing units and only 777 households, so roughly half the houses in town weren’t anybody’s main address. Some of that growth is new construction. A good deal of it is people winterizing the summer place and staying.
Those are exactly the houses that got a ductless mini-split. No ductwork to begin with, maybe electric baseboard or a stove, and an Eversource or Co-op rebate through NHSaves that made a cold-climate heat pump easy to say yes to. A few years on, that mini-split is doing the bulk of the heating from November to April.
The thing is, nobody gets told about the blower wheel when it’s installed. Filters, yes. The wheel, no.
Madison Tip
Find your install paperwork and tape it inside a kitchen cabinet with our visit dates written on it. When something goes wrong in year six, that sheet answers the first three questions any repair tech will ask.
What you get at the yearly visit
The cleaning doesn’t get lighter just because it’s routine. Cover, filters and louvers off; coil flushed until clear; blower wheel scrubbed vane by vane; drain pan and line cleared; outdoor compressor coil washed through. A lighter version would just be a filter rinse, and you can do that yourself between visits.
What the yearly visit adds is the measuring. We check the temperature change across the indoor coil so we know it’s actually moving heat, not just making noise. Watch the condensate drain out the far end. Look for torn filters. Make sure the outdoor compressor is still level on its stand and sitting high enough that snow sliding off a metal roof won’t bury it — that one matters a lot out on the farm roads. Anything off gets written up in plain words with a photo.
Before we leave, next year’s date goes on the calendar. If the unit came apart clean and barely runs, we’ll tell you to skip a year. Honest is cheaper for everyone in the long run.
Each yearly visit is $199 for the first indoor mini-split along with its outdoor compressor. More indoor mini-splits are $119 apiece, more compressors $69 apiece, and $199 is the floor for any visit. The job is the same every year, so the price is too.

Maintenance Near Madison
Common Questions in Madison
Does the rebate require any maintenance?
Rebate rules come from the utility and NHSaves, and they change, so check your own paperwork. Separately, most manufacturer warranties expect the unit to be kept clean. A dated record of a yearly professional cleaning, with photos, is the easiest way to show that if you ever need to make a warranty claim.
When is the best time of year?
For a mini-split that does most of your heating, late spring, right after heating season. It goes into summer cooling clean, and anything we find has months to get fixed before you need heat again. Fall works too, but that’s when everyone else calls.
Do you remind us?
Yes. We set next year’s date at the end of the visit and get in touch before it comes around. Move it whenever you need to. Plenty of Madison customers like it this way, because nobody has to remember anything and the unit gets done before it starts acting up.
What should I do between visits?
Rinse the filters every few weeks in heavy heating or cooling use, if you can reach them safely. Keep snow, leaves and needles off the outdoor compressor. That’s it. Don’t spray cleaners into the coil yourself; it tends to push grime deeper and can soak the control board.
