The village sits along Old Portland Road, and most of the houses on it went up in the late nineteenth century — the Freedom Historical Society keeps the Allard House and the Works Barn at number 28 if you want to see what heating one of them used to involve. There is no natural gas anywhere in town. Water comes from private wells or the Freedom Water Precinct, every house is on its own septic, and heat is oil, propane, wood, or electric, which is exactly why so many ductless mini-splits got hung on walls here once the Eversource and NH Electric Co-op rebates came through — Freedom is split between the two. The census counts around 1,900 housing units for a town of roughly 1,600 people, so a big share of what you drive past on Ossipee Lake Road and around Loon Lake is somebody’s summer place. The year-round side looks east toward Conway for work, school past sixth grade, and the hardware store, and the nearest hospital is Huggins in Wolfeboro, 23 miles off. Practical upshot: plenty of Freedom mini-splits work hard all winter in a house with a stove going, and plenty more sit shut in a cottage from Columbus Day to Memorial Day. Those two need different things from us.
