Seasonal Mini-Split Maintenance in Tamworth
Electric utility: Eversource (NH Electric Co-op along the Sandwich line) · Carroll County
Tamworth is an Eversource town almost end to end — the old PSNH lines — with a small piece of NH Electric Co-op territory along the Sandwich line. Either way the rebate program is NHSaves, and either way the pitch was the same: six in ten homes here heated with oil or kerosene the last time anyone counted, so a heat pump that carries the shoulder seasons and most of the winter pays for itself. In 2024 the town adopted community power on top of that. The result is a lot of mini-splits installed in the last five or six years in year-round houses along Route 25 in South Tamworth and Whittier, on the back roads off 113, and in the manufactured-home neighborhoods like Tamworth Pines, where electric baseboard was the old heat and the rebate for replacing it is the biggest one NHSaves offers.
Those are the units that get run hardest. Not a camp mini-split doing eight weeks of July. A primary-heat mini-split doing 83 inches of snow, defrost cycles at five in the morning, and a filter that hasn’t been out since the installer left. The outdoor compressor sits in a snowbank, sometimes under the drip line of a metal roof, and by February it’s iced on the north side. Nobody notices until the electric bill comes or the bedroom is 58 degrees.
Maintenance here is less about the smell and more about the numbers: airflow, temperature split, defrost, drain, and whether the compressor can breathe. We check them twice a year and write them down so the next visit has something to compare against.
Tamworth Tip
Book the fall visit for the last two weeks of September — after Labor Day traffic on 16 dies down and before the first frost, so the compressor is clear and the drain is empty when the first real cold hits.
Fall visit, spring visit, and why they’re different
The fall visit, September into October, is about heat. Filters and louvers washed, the blower wheel and coil inspected and cleaned if there’s buildup from the summer, the condensate line cleared so it doesn’t freeze with water in it, and the outdoor compressor cleaned and checked: coil rinsed, fan free, base pan draining, clearance above and around it so defrost water and roof snow have somewhere to go. We run it in heat and check the temperature rise at the louvers against the outdoor temperature.
The spring visit, April into May, is about what the winter did. Ash and dust on the wheel from six months of running, the drain line checked after the freeze, the outdoor coil rinsed of road salt and sand off Route 16 or 25, the pad checked for frost heave. Then it runs in cool and we confirm it’s pulling water and the pan is draining, before the humid weather asks it to.
Either visit, if the wheel is coated it gets the full cleaning — there’s no separate price for that. And if we see a problem that’s the installer’s or the manufacturer’s, we’ll say so and leave it to them.
Each visit is $199 for the first indoor mini-split with its outdoor compressor, $119 for each additional indoor mini-split, and $69 for each additional compressor. A two-mini-split, one-compressor home in Tamworth Pines is $318 a visit. A four-zone house on Route 25 with two compressors is $625. No contract, no auto-renew; book each visit when you want it.

Common Questions in Tamworth
Do I need both visits if the mini-split is only backup to the oil furnace?
Probably not. A backup unit that runs a few hundred hours a year does fine with one spring visit. The two-visit schedule is for houses where the mini-split carries the winter, which in Tamworth is most of the rebate installs from the last several years. If you’re not sure which you are, look at the January electric bill.
My compressor sits under a metal roof. Is that a problem?
It can be. A metal roof drops its snow in one slide, and a compressor under the drip line gets buried or takes a hit. Ice building on the coil from roof meltwater is worse than snow. We’ll clear it, check the fan, and tell you if it needs a diverter or a taller stand; that’s small work that saves the unit.
Does maintenance keep my NHSaves rebate or warranty valid?
The rebate is paid at installation and isn’t affected by service afterward. Warranties vary by manufacturer and installer, and most expect the unit to be kept clean; a written service record helps if you ever need to make a claim. We leave a record of what was checked and what we found at every visit.
Can you service a manufactured home in Tamworth Pines?
Yes, and we see a lot of them. Mini-splits in manufactured homes tend to be single-zone units doing all the heat, mounted on an exterior wall with a short line set and a compressor on a pad at grade, right in the snow-shed. They run hard and the pad often heaves. None of that changes the price.
