New Hampton is a wood town by Lakes Region standards, with nearly 13 percent of homes heating with it per Census data, and that is the first thing we find on a coil here. The farmhouses out Route 132 and up Dana Hill, the older places around the village and the school, and the newer houses off Route 104 that added a stove for backup all put fine ash into the air every winter. What the teardown involves on a wood-heated mini-split
Ash is the reason the blower wheel gets the most attention in New Hampton. After the cover, louvers, filters and pan come off and the bib bag goes on, the wheel is either pulled and washed in the sink or scrubbed and flushed on the shaft until every vane is clean. The coil gets a no-rinse cleaner, dwell time, and a flush until the runoff turns from gray to clear.
Then the pan gets scrubbed, the stub cleared, and the condensate line blown out to wherever it exits. Louvers, filters and the inside of the cover are washed. Wet parts are sanitized, the mini-split is rebuilt, and we run it on cool and on heat while checking the air off the louvers and that water moves through the drain.
